THE COCKTAIL CRITERIA
The participating bartender will be required to submit an original cocktail recipe, that meets the recipe criteria described below (the ‘Entry’):
- There is a limit of one (1) Entry per person.
- Recipes must be expressed in millilitres, with dashes and/or drops being the smallest quantities.
- The recipe should contain no more than 3 units of alcohol. A unit of alcohol is defined as 10 ml of alcohol at 100% ABV.
- To calculate the number of units of any volume of spirit, multiply the volume of spirits in litres by the percentage of alcohol by volume: e.g. 50ml of BACARDÍ® Reserva 8 at 40% = 0.05 x 40.0 = 2 units.
- The total number of units of the complete cocktail can be calculated by adding the units of each alcoholic ingredient.
- The recipe must be rum-based and include as the dominant spirit ingredient either of the following products: BACARDÍ® Carta Blanca Rum, BACARDÍ® Carta Oro Rum, BACARDÍ® Añejo Cuatro Rum or BACARDÍ® Reserva Ocho Rum.
- The recipe must contain no other rum brands.
- The recipes must contain no more than six (6) ingredients. Any garnish or spritz that is not already listed as an ingredient and which changes the taste or aromatic profile of the cocktail will be considered an additional ingredient – e.g. aromatic herbs, zests, spices, bitters or liqueurs applied to the glass or drink, etc…
- The recipe should contain commonly available ingredients. Commonly available ingredients are defined as those ingredients that are frequently available to ‘cocktail bars’ around the world.
- House specific, or home-made, ingredients will not be eligible unless these are easy to make and are accompanied by a full recipe and methodology of preparation.
- Home-made syrups are permitted but must have no more than two (2) flavor ingredients.
- Home-made shrubs are permitted but must have no more than two (2) flavor ingredients (with the vinegar being included as one (1) flavor ingredient).
- Home-made bitters and tinctures are prohibited.
- Home-made fermented beverages e.g. kefir, kombucha, kvass are prohibited.
- Home-made rum blends or rum infusions are prohibited.
- It is prohibited to use ingredients that contain tobacco, any type of drug or psychotropic ingredient. It is also prohibited to use any kind of flame when preparing your cocktail.
- Competitors must specify an original name for their cocktail.
- The name may not include any element covered by a third party’s copyright or trademark or any retailer’s name, except that competitors may use the BACARDÍ® brand in the name.
- The name must also adhere to the Bacardi Group’s Responsible Marketing Principles. In particular competitors need to ensure that names:
- do not appeal to those below the legal drinking age;
- do not emphasize or allude to the alcoholic strength or the alcohol effect of the drink;
- do not suggest association with illicit drugs;
- are not associated with bravado, dangerous or anti-social behaviour;
- avoid any association with sex or sexual success;
- avoid any association with sports, educational activities or civic/religious festivities;
- do not imply any medicinal properties or values;
- do not link to illegal, irresponsible or immoderate consumption and;
- do not allude to enhanced mental or physical capabilities.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
No entry fee is payable by the competitors to compete in the BACARDÍ® Legacy Competition. To take part in BACARDÍ® Legacy Wildcard competitors need to visit the online entry portal for the competition which can be found at the following URL address: www.bacardilegacy.com and submit their BACARDÍ® Legacy Cocktail in the applicable section.

Competitors must create an original BACARDÍ® rum cocktail based on the recipe criteria outlined above and submit the information below to the online entry portal (www.bacardilegacy.com) before the Closing Date:
- Cocktail name;
- Cocktail ingredients list;
- Glass type;
- Cocktail preparation methodology;
- Special ingredient preparation method (if applicable);
- A photograph of the cocktail that includes no element likely to identify the person who created the drink or the bar in which he/she works.
- Agreement to accept the terms and conditions of the competition.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
By participating in the Competition, competitors expressly acknowledge that they are aware of, and they unconditionally agree to, (i) the Terms and Conditions (ii) and the broader Program Requirements of which they are part, (iii) all applicable laws and regulations; and (iv) the fact that the decisions of the Local and, respectively, Global Bacardi Promoter decisions, will be final and binding upon them, and they waive any appeal or other remedy. The Competition is not intended for consumers. Nevertheless, should a candidate participant or a participant be considered for any reason a consumer by mandatory laws or regulations, then nothing in the Terms and Conditions and in the resulting agreement is intended to avoid the application of such mandatory laws or regulations.
Once entries have closed a regional ambassador will select the top 20 recipes from the submissions received from their region. These will be submitted to the Global Brand Ambassador to select a shortlist of 8 per region.
The entries will be shortlisted and judged based on the following regions:
- Americas & Caribbean (8 shortlisted)
- Asia Pacific (8 shortlisted)
- Africa & Middle East (8 shortlisted)
- Europe (8 shortlisted)
From here the 32 shortlist competitors will be invited to compete in a virtual final to determine the four Wildcard Regional Finalists who will go on to the next stage of the competition.
VIRTUAL WILDCARD SEMI FINAL
A panel of three judges will be convened to select the region-specific finalists from the Wildcard competitors via a virtual Wildcard final. The virtual Wildcard Final will be held at the Bacardi offices in either London or Miami. Each competitor will submit a video presenting their Legacy cocktail. This presentation should take place in the competitor’s bar. Each video submission must be a maximum of six (6) minutes in which the competitor will prepare their cocktail. The video submitted must be shot in one take (not several takes edited together). During the judging of the virtual Wildcard Semi Final, each of the shortlisted competitor cocktails will be made for the judges by a bar team in real time while they view the competitors video. The bar team will make two servings of the Wildcard shortlisted BACARDÍ® Legacy cocktail. Each competitor will have the opportunity prior to judging to liaise with the bar team to discuss the preparation for their cocktail. The judges’ scores will determine the Four (4) Wildcard Finalist competitors with one from each region, the Four (4) will progress to the next stage of the Competition. The Wildcard video submission must be provided in English or Spanish. The Four (4) Wildcard Finalists will be informed about the dates of the next stage of the Competition, via email, at an opportune time.
FOUR (4) WILDCARD FINALISTS COCKTAIL CAMPAIGN
The Four (4) Wildcard Finalists will progress to the next stage of the Competition for which they will have a minimum of three (3) months to demonstrate that their cocktail has the potential to establish itself in the industry. They will do this by completing a series of challenges to create a promotional campaign and plan (collectively, the “Cocktail Campaign”) for their drink and, over the given period, by demonstrating that the cocktail has achieved visibility, awareness and trial amongst both the trade and consumers. The Cocktail Campaign will account for one third (1/3) of the total marks for the BACARDÍ® Legacy Wildcard Final, as explained below.. During the Cocktail Campaign rollout, the Global Bacardi Promoter, may provide promotional support to each of the Four (4) Wildcard Finalists to the value of $1000USD. This support is not transferrable. The Global Bacardi Promoter, at its sole discretion, will determine the provision of this promotional support and will have the right to stop, reduce or substitute the promotional support (or a component thereof), at its sole discretion.
WILDCARD FINALISTS COCKTAIL CAMPAIGN SCORING
At the end of the 3-month period, the promoter will assess the level of completion of the challenges outlined in the “Cocktail Campaign” period. This will determine each Wildcard Finalist’s score which will account for one third (1/3) of their total marks for the BACARDÍ® Legacy Wildcard Final.
The Cocktail Campaign presentations shall be delivered in English and the Wildcard Final will take place in English.
The Wildcard Final will take place alongside another national final. During the Wildcard Final, each of the Wildcard Finalists will be asked to make their BACARDÍ® Legacy Cocktail Entry for the judges, using the Judging Criteria specified below. The scores awarded by this panel of judges will constitute two thirds (2/3) of the marks in the Wildcard Final and will be combined with the scores from the Cocktail Campaign to identify the Wildcard BACARDÍ® Legacy Winner. The Wildcard Final will take place in English.
WILDCARD WINNER’S PRIZE
The Wildcard Winner will receive a trophy and a trip to the BACARDÍ® Legacy Competition Global Final which will be held in Miami, U.S.A. The trip includes: (a) round-trip coach/ economy class airfare for one person from an airport close to the Wildcard Winner’s home to Miami (b) hotel accommodation for the duration of the Competition; and (c) subsistence and local travel associated with the Competition Global Final’s events for the duration of the Competition. The actual value of the trip may vary depending on various factors, including the date of booking, the point of departure, and the dates of travel. Any prize details not specified above will be determined by the Global Bacardi Promoter, in its sole discretion. The prize may not be transferred and must be accepted as awarded. A winner may not request cash or a substitute prize; however, the Global Bacardi Promoter reserves the right to substitute a prize (or component thereof) with another prize (or component thereof) of equal or greater value if the prize is not available for any reason, as determined by the Global Bacardi Promoter, in its sole discretion. Winners must travel on the dates specified by the Global Bacardi Promoter. Once travel tickets and documents are issued, travel arrangements cannot be changed. If a winner cannot travel on the dates specified by the Global Bacardi Promoter, he/she will not be permitted to compete in the next stage of the Competition. Winners are responsible for securing, at their own expense, passports, visas, and any other documents necessary for international travel. In addition, the Wildcard Winner is responsible for paying any applicable income taxes and any and all other costs and expenses not specifically listed above.
The Global Final for the BACARDÍ® Legacy Competition 2020 will take place in Miami, U.S.A and is organised by Bacardi-Martini B.V. (“Global Bacardi Promoter”). During the Global Final, each of the National Winners and the Wildcard Winner will be asked to participate in educational seminars and interactive workshops held by international cocktail industry influencers. They will then be required to take part in two days of global semi-finals where they must present their BACARDÍ® Legacy Cocktail Entry to a panel of expert judges appointed by the Global Bacardi Promoter, and present a summary of their Cocktail Campaign to another panel of expert judges, also appointed by the Global Bacardi Promoter, using the Judging Criteria described below. At the end of the second day of global semi-finals, the sixteen (16) ´Best Drink’ performances will be announced based on the points from competitors’ drink presentations only. To the scores of these sixteen (16) ‘Best Drink’, the scores from their Cocktail Campaign presentation will be added and the eight (8) competitors with the highest combined scores will be named the ‘Final Ocho’, or the BACARDÍ® Legacy Global Finalists. The following day, these eight (8) finalists will be required to present their BACARDÍ® Legacy cocktail to a new panel of expert judges appointed by the Global Bacardi Promoter. Using only the scores from this final presentation, and using the Judging Criteria specified below, the judges will select and then announce the BACARDÍ® Legacy Global Winner. All stages of the Global Final will take place in English.
GLOBAL WINNER’S PRIZE
The Global Winner will receive a trophy and a tailor made BACARDÍ experience, designed in conjunction with the BACARDÍ Rum Global Brand Ambassador. This experience will include educational visits to some of the world’s most influential cocktail cities and industry events, e.g. Tales of the Cocktail, London Cocktail Week, Bar Convent Berlin, etc. Any prize details not specified above will be determined by the Global Bacardi Promoter in its sole discretion. The prize may not be transferred and must be accepted as awarded. A winner may not request cash or a substitute prize; however, the Global Bacardi Promoter reserves the right to substitute a prize (or component thereof) with another prize (or component thereof) of equal or greater value if the prize is not available for any reason, as determined by the Global Bacardi Promoter, in its sole discretion. The Global Winner must travel on the dates specified by the Global Bacardi Promoter. Once travel documents are issued, travel arrangements cannot be changed. If the Global Winner cannot travel on the dates specified by the Global Bacardi Promoter, he/she will lose the right to that part of the prize. The Global Winner are responsible for securing, at his/her own expense, passports, visas, and any other documents necessary for international travel. In addition, the Global Winner is responsible for paying any applicable income taxes and any and all other costs and expenses not specifically listed above.
The following General Judging Criteria will be used to judge a contestant’s BACARDÍ Legacy cocktail in both the Local and Regional Finals:

- A -10 point time penalty will be incurred from each judge if the competitor goes overtime.
During this phase of the Competition, competitors will have eight (8) minutes to set up the bar and present their BACARDÍ® Legacy cocktail and make two (2) cocktails for the judges.
COCKTAIL CAMPAIGN SCORING – WILDCARD FINAL

Each competitor will receive a mark out of seven determined by how many of the challenges they have completed. Challenges 1 and 2 have set deadlines for completion, the other 5 can be completed at any time prior to the Wildcard Final.

COCKTAIL CAMPAIGN PRESENTATION – GLOBAL FINAL

During the Cocktail Campaign Presentation, competitors will have seven (7) minutes to present a summary of their campaign and (3) minutes to respond to questions posed by the expert judges. At Bacardi’s sole discretion this time may be increased in the Wildcard Finals stage.
Competitors’ presentations must be in a Microsoft PowerPoint, Key Notes or PDF format. Competitors reaching the Global Final must complete a promotional summary sheet with the information required by the judges to understand the promotional limitations of the market in which the competitor operates; the level of support provided by the local Bacardi Company, and the personal achievements of each competitor in establishing their BACARDÍ® Legacy cocktail. The information on the Cocktail Campaign and, where applicable, the promotional summary sheet must match, and both of these documents must be delivered to the BACARDÍ® Legacy organizing committee, on a USB pen-drive by the date and time stipulated, with no exceptions.
Any claims made in the Cocktail Campaign presentations must be supported with documented evidence, including sales tickets from bars, photography of events and / or any promotional collateral created. The clock will be stopped during the Cocktail Campaign presentation for any technical problems associated with the materials presented in the incorrect format, including any technical problems associated with video or audio that the competitor wishes to share, or for any interruption beyond the competitor’s control. During the Cocktail Campaign Presentation, a representative of the Local Bacardi Promoter, at their discretion, may accompany the competitor. This Local Bacardi Promoter representative may assist with translation to English if the competitor requires this, however no additional time will be given to competitors who require this translation.
Specific information about the ownership and usage rights of any cocktail name, recipe, drink story, cocktail or competitor photography, as well as the right of using the name and the images of the competitor taken during the Competition are detailed in the Terms and Conditions.
